Mary Immaculate College
Strengths
Founded in 1898 to train teachers, Mary Immaculate College has come a long way since the first students walked through its doors. Today MIC is a thoroughly modern institution, offering a variety of education and liberal arts programmes to almost 5,000 students. It may be the oldest higher education institution in Limerick, but the transformation of the campus, particularly over the last 20 years, reflects a commitment to providing the best possible facilities.
It retains a historic charm with period buildings and facilities, but boasts contemporary facilities such as the TARA Building, the Lime Tree Theatre and the Tailteann Sports Complex, which complement the dynamic student experience.

Campus
Limerick has three higher education institutions with a total student population of 30,000. Student life is at the heart of the city and the streets are filled with cinemas, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. The campus boasts a magnificent 510-seat theatre that attracts national and international artists in music, theatre, dance and comedy, as well as another 300-seat university-run theatre/cinema in the city centre. A number of sporting and cultural activities are offered on campus.
The 350-seat university restaurant is located on the ground floor and offers a daily menu of hot and cold food and drink, as well as a Starbucks coffee outlet and facilities for students to bring their own lunches.
The magnificent MIC College Chapel, built in 1906, is also located in the Foundation building. A legacy of the Sisters of Mercy, the order that co-founded MIC, is that some of the rooms where the nuns lived on the site have been refurbished as meeting rooms and offices.
To discover
Limerick is Ireland’s third largest city and is renowned for its culture and heritage. Originally founded as a Viking fortress, King John’s majestic medieval castle still stands at the heart of Limerick city, on the beautiful River Shannon. With a population of just under 200,000, Limerick is a safe and welcoming environment for students. It’s easy to get around and yet has all the conveniences and benefits of city life. Limerick is a lively city where everything can be done on foot: walks along the river, historical visits, a hot-chocolate break in a café, a lively evening in a pub. Many of Ireland’s most famous and picturesque tourist attractions are located around Limerick, including the Burren, Bunratty Castle, the Ring of Kerry, the Rock of Cashel and, of course, the Cliffs of Moher. Conveniently located just twenty minutes from Shannon International Airport, international students can easily travel throughout Europe. Limerick is also the sporting capital of west-central Ireland. Home to the professional rugby team Munster, it also has two stadiums and numerous sports facilities.
Good to know
Limerick is also known as the birthplace of a speciality: Irish coffee. Although many claim it as their own, this drink originated in County Limerick, with the restaurateur Joseph Sheridan, from the port town of Foynes. In the 1940s, it was from this port that liners left for America, and this hot drink was intended to cool and warm emigrants during the long crossing.
