To discover
Uruguay is the smallest country in South America and Montevideo, its capital, is a vibrant, modern city bordering the bay that bears its name. It is organized around the Plaza de la Independencia, which once was the site of a Spanish citadel. This square leads to the Ciudad Vieja (old town), which contains Art Deco buildings, colonial mansions and monuments such as the High Salvo Palace and the Teatro Solís performance hall – built in a neoclassical style.
The Mercado del Puerto is a market in the old port, where there are many grill restaurants.
Montevideo is defined by its quality of life and the cultural level of its warm and open inhabitants. Uruguayan culture is unique, as it is a fusion of significant European influence and local life in South America.
Colonia del Sacramento, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Punta del Este, a famous seaside resort, are just a short car or bus ride from the capital.
