To discover
On China’s central coast, Shanghai is the country’s largest city and an international financial center. At its heart is the Bund, a famous waterfront promenade lined with colonial-era buildings. Opposite the Huangpu River lies the futuristic Pudong district, with its 632 m-high Shanghai Tower and the Pearl of the Orient TV Tower, characterized by its pink spheres.
Just 15 or 20 years ago, Shanghai seemed almost abandoned, stuck in a bygone century, but today it’s a booming, exploding city where buildings and skyscrapers seem to spring up from the ground day after day. Economic activity is flourishing here, and thanks to its location close to the sea, it attracts residents from China, expatriates from all over the world and tourists alike.
Shanghai is considered the “Paris of the Orient”, thanks to its unique blend of East and West. Among the many activities on offer, you can choose to explore the former French Concession district by bike, take a sidecar ride through the city, stroll along the Huangpu River quays and the Bund, lose yourself in the relaxing Yuou Garden or relax in a tea house.
Good to know
At over 588km, Shanghai’s metro network is the largest in the world and, with 3.4 billion annual journeys, one of the busiest. Shanghai metro fares depend on the distance of the journey and vary from ¥3 (€0.40) to ¥14 (€1.80). The first 6 kilometers cost ¥3 (€0.40), and ¥1 (€0.10) more for each additional 10 kilometers.
The Shanghai metro is quite saturated, especially during rush hour.
Ferries are a fast and economical way to cross the Huangpu River, and offer the best view of the city, making them an interesting alternative to the metro.
